Anniversary of Ayrton Senna’s Last Lap

Jalopnik, in one of their more depressing posts, reminds all of us that today marks the 14th anniversary of Ayrton Senna’s death. Senna, a three time Formula 1 champion, died after crashing his car while leading the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. Ayrton Senna was perhaps Formula 1’s greatest driver, and certainly one of it’s most beloved. He was a great man; some of the tribute videos will just break your heart.

This week also marks the 14th Anniversary of Roland Ratzenberger’s death, who lost his life during practice at the very same San Marino GP event.

Raikkonen and Massa have F1’s victory circle seeing red

No, not Max Mosley nazi-red, Ferrari red. Driver Kimi Raikkonen cruised to victory yesterday after leading the Spanish GP from start to finish, followed a few seconds later by his Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa. McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton took third. It was the 78th 1 - 2 team finish in F1 history.

Raikkonen is now sitting at 29 points for the season, nine ahead of second place Lewis Hamilton. Ferrari is also now in the lead of the constructor’s standings.

Force India’s new Formula 1 motorhome is simply outrageous

Force India F1 debuted their new “motorhome” on Thursday at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunyn , and judging by the above photo, it is simply outrageous. Force India plans to take their rolling office building to all of this seasons European F1 races. No word on price, or how many nuclear generators are required to power the mother of all motorhomes.

Ex-F1 racer Martin Brundle talks about F1’s new KERS system

Itv-f1.com has a good feature with ex Formula 1 driver Martin Brundle wherein he expresses his views on the new changes to F1, including his take on the new Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS, F1’s attempt to go ‘green’).

The big car manufacturers are dead keen of course given that they have the budgets and the road car technology transfer to enjoy. The difference between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’ will undoubtedly increase with KERS. The tail-end teams won‘t have the resources to maximise the potential upsides.

He makes mention of the “uncomfortable ‘crossroads’” that F1 has found itself in, and asks once and for all: is Formula 1 “a sport, a show, a business or a high-tech R&D platform?” I’ve always thought of it as a business, or rather a giant advertisement. Still fun to watch though.

Kimi Raikkonen leads the way going into European F1 season

Now that the unofficial Formula 1 pre-season is out of the way, the Spanish Grand Prix and European F1 season is set to kick off with Ferrari’s own Kimi Raikkonen in rather friendly territory: as points leader. After winning in Malaysia and placing second in Bahrian, Raikonnen leads second place BMW Sauber driver Nick Hiedfeld by three points going into Barcelona.

In the constructors’ championship, Ferrari is a single point behind BMW Sauber.

Also to kick off with the Barcelona race is the FIA’s new anti-racism campaign; a response to the racial prejudice driver Lewis Hamilton was subjected to back in February.

VIDEO: Renault F1’s greatest hits (V10 series)

I know these are a little old, but watching Top Gear last night and seeing the Renault F1 team (with their F1 car circa V10 era) brought back some of these memories. So, in honor of the V10 era, here’s a compilation of Renault F1’s greatest musical hits (all done using the car’s engine). The motor can play three songs in all: ‘We are the Champions’, and the Spanish and French national anthems.

God Save The Queen
