More on The 670hp Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series

Motortrend has a bit more on the upcoming 670hp Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series that I posted about earlier this week.

The next Black Series is out of the bag. Mercedes-Benz’s AMG offered a small group of journalists a sneak peek of its 670-horsepower supercar at the New York show last month, issued with the world’s most vague embargo. So here we are with details. AMG says the SL65 Black Series is capable of 220 mph, but it’s speed-limited to 300 kp/h, or about 186 mph and can do 0-60 mph in less than 4 seconds.

Running on the automotive treadmill shaves 570 pounds off the car’s curb weight, 88 pounds of which are the result of switching to a fixed roof. It’s now a relatively svelt 4080 pounds.

This car should be capable of besting the McLaren SLR (a joint Mercedes/McLaren venture). It’ll be interesting to see how quickly this thing gets around the Nurburgring, or it’ll give the new Corvette ZR1 and Nissan GTR a run for their money (I’m guessing not).

Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series gets 670hp and some lipo

I’ve always been a fan of Mercedes, so it makes me rather happy to see them taking performance cars more seriously. Now if they’d just offer a proper manual gearbox…

It starts with a 6.0-liter twin turbo V12 engine. In the standard SL65 AMG it pumps out a healthy 604 horsepower, but in the Black Series the same engine gets cranked up to 670 hp. The torque peak won’t increase, but given that it already sits at 738 pound-feet, there’s really isn’t a need for more. The five-speed automatic transmission, torque converter and all, will remain, but it will get two Sport shift programs, with the second delivering quicker gearchanges timed at just 250 milliseconds.
